Windmühlen sharpening rod "Corundin"

The new “Corundin®” sharpening rod possesses the best sharpening capability with its high degree of grinding particle fineness. It is composed almost completely of highly compacted aluminium oxides and exhibits a grit size of approx. 600 (German standard) or 1500 (Japanese standard). It is smooth, yet offers a very “concentrated” action, which results in an exceptional degree of sharpness while delivering the smoothest cutting edge at the same time. The usable area of the sharpening rod Corundin is approx. 30 cm. The handle of the BBQ Edition is made of oak and the handle protective plate made of stainless steel. In addition, the handle is equipped with a leather strap for practical hanging

Sharpening

Draw the cutting edge of the knife across the sharpening rod from the bolster to the blade tip. For our knives manufactured using the ”Solingen-Dry-Fine-Grinding®“ process (hand-sharpening method used in Solingen), 2 to 3 strokes on each side of the blade are perfectly sufficient. Try to use the whole length of the ceramic rod. The cutting edge should be placed on the ceramic rod at an acute angle. You will hear whether the cutting edge is in proper contact with the rod through a gentle, sandy sound and you will feel how the blade “engages”. The sound of the cutting edge contacting the rod may neither be scratchy nor overly smooth. Do not use too much force – it is better to repeat the sharpening process in order to achieve the desired result.

Cleaning

As with all ceramic materials that are used for sharpening, a little bit of steel – which is abraded from the blades – remains on the rod. This causes the ceramic surface to become too smooth and the sharpening power therefore decreases. With the rod in a wetted state the supplied abrasive-eraser can be used to easily remove the steel deposits, just like using a rubber eraser. The sharpening rod is then fully ready for use again

Repairability

Should you ever drop your sharpening rod and the ceramic becomes damaged or broken, you can send it for repair. In contrast with other sharpening steels, the ceramic element of the Corundin® sharpening rod can be replaced, thereby saving costs and conserving materials.
